Think Before You Throw campaign

CWA and West Cornwall FoE organised a competition to design an eye-catching poster highlighting the dangers of  litter on beaches and in the sea,  particularly plastic, on wildlife.  Pupils from Penwith schools were invited to enter the competetion and the winning entry was chosen by a local artist, Kurt Jackson.

The overall winner, Alana Griffiths (then aged 10) of St Just School was chosen from over 100 entries and  her poster has been professionally printed and displayed throughout Cornwall. The runners up were Freya Hicks and Cai Frayne-Hughes, also of St Just School.

Plastic litter dropped on beaches is a serious threat to wildlife - birds and fish often get tangled in plastic, which can lead to starvation or drowning. Discarded plastic bags can be mistaken for food and can injure a range of wildlife including turtles and porpoises as well as sea birds. Many people think this issue is not a problem in Cornwall, but sadly this is not the case; the beach clean organised by Cornwall Waste Action at Marazion last Autumn collected over 20 sacks of litter in 2 hours!”

Kurt Jackson said  that the winning entry has a brilliantly simple design which is eye-catching and clearly gets the message across. There has been a great deal of national press coverage about the problems caused by waste plastic, particularly bags.  The poster will hopefully encourage people to put their beach litter in the bin or, even better, recycle it.
