Behavioural Change and Community Engagement

CWA provides services for the local authority and other organisations to promote increased environmental awareness.

CWA has developed successful techniques to encourage people to change behaviour, particularly in terms of increasing recycling/composting and reducing waste.  We use a combination of information provision and marketing and above all one to one contacts in order to break down any barriers to behavioural change (it’s surprising how many people will start to recycle when they are reminded of their collection day and/or provided with recycling boxes/bags). We back this up with statistical analysis in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

CWA works in partnership with Cornwall Council and other organisations to promote behavioural change and awareness of waste issues in Cornwall.  We are particularly interested in doing  work on carbon foot-printing and waste audits and helping organisations to reduce their overall environmental impact.

Previous projects:

Recycle for Cornwall (with Rezolve and Cornwall Council) – a County-wide recycling awareness project that helped to increase recycling rates by 22% over the life of the project.

Recycle for Your Community – recycling awareness project in partnership with the  former district councils of Penwith and Kerrier.  40% of those surveyed reported an increase in recycling and 60% reported a decrease in waste produced.

Restormel Incentives Project – (with Rezolve) offered a 10K prize to the community that had the biggest increase in recycling over a set period. Fierce competition meant that recycling increased by 22% over the period of the project. Sticker, the winning community, increased their recycling by an average 9.6kg per household.

Think Before You Throw

CWA has undertaken other community engagement work, as part of wider activities around marine litter and beach cleans, including this campaign which highlights the dangers of litter on our beaches and in the sea. <read more>
