Get Growing & Composting with Growing Together

Local residents of the China Clay area are being given the opportunity to learn more about organic gardening and composting for free. Thanks to Local Food and China Clay Local Action Group grants anyone living in the China Clay area is able to access a ‘Get Growing’ Organic Gardening and ‘Get Composting’ course for free. The sessions, run by local experts, are being provided by Growing Together, the China Clay’s new garden share scheme, with the aim of encouraging more people to grow their own.

The next Composting Workshop will run on Saturday 22nd October from 11am – 1pm at the Clay TAWC in St Dennis. Cornwall Waste Action (CWA) in partnership with Growing Together are looking for “Compost Mentors’’ to take part in this community initiative that aims to encourage more people to grow their own food using compost created from kitchen scraps and garden waste. All participants who complete the workshop will be provided with a free compost bin, caddy and compost information pack whilst friends, family or neighbours mentored will also receive a free bin.

Julia Pollard, CWA’s Compost Project Worker, who will be running the Compost Workshop says: “This workshop will give people the knowledge to create their own compost in their garden or allotment and has both practical and theory elements to it. When you know active home composting reduces the volume of waste going to landfill as well as the production of harmful gases provoking climate change it really starts to make sense.”

Julia added “Composting all your kitchen and garden waste, requires a little effort every day, but environmentally it makes a big difference, whilst it also provides you with free, wonderful compost to use in your garden”.

Clay residents are also encouraged to attend the The Get Growing Organic Gardening Course which is a free, certificated, introductory course in Organic Gardening, run by Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change. The course teaches the basics of organic gardening, how to grow seasonal food and how to improve your garden for wildlife.

Although based in the classroom there will also be a few opportunities for people on the course to feel the soil in their hands. Course participants will also be given free gardening tools to help them get started. Starting on Wednesday 26th October the course takes place at the Clay TAWC St Dennis every Wednesday morning from 9am – 1pm for 7 weeks.

Places on these sessions are limited and available on a first come basis. If you are interested in joining them but can’t make these dates, don’t worry, there will be more run through 2012.
