Join SeaScapes this summer!

Cornwall Waste Action, a Redruth based not for profit environmental organisation are providing local people within the Camborne and Redruth area, the opportunity to take part in a range of beach based environmental activities this summer.

The aim of the SeaScapes project is to increase awareness of the local environment and encourage greater community involvement with public open spaces that supports greater public ownership. The project is funded by the Big Lottery and is free for participants; the project is keen to involve local residents who are members of disadvantaged communities, who may not currently access coastal areas for recreational purposes on a regular basis.

The project builds on previous Cornwall Waste Action beach cleaning activity, with additional tasks, that aim to actively encourage local communities to use open spaces as a resource for beneficial outdoor activities such as coastal walks, bird-watching, wildflower identification, wild food foraging  and rocky rambles, as well as educational games and fun events.

SeaScapes will also highlight the dangers to wildlife from litter, especially plastic, left on the beach and marine environment. Participants on all visits undertaken by the project will need to take part in beach cleans and surveys that will involve litter picking and some rubbish clearance.

CornwallWaste Action Co-ordinator, Guy Doncaster says “We developed SeaScapes because we came aware that a significant amount of local people including children, never visit the beach, even though it is relatively close to their homes.  We have inCornwallsome great beaches and surrounding environments, which should not just be the reserve of visitors from outside the area.”  Mr Doncaster added “ Its really important to look after these open spaces for wildlife as well as humans, that’s why we are doing beach cleans and surveys to highlight the problems of litter on the marine environment.”

The first event starts on Friday 22nd July from 10 am to 3 pm and will be followed by regular events on alternative Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer, at a range of beach locations.  Ending with a final celebratory event at Cornwall Waste Action’s Big Beach Clean at Marazion Beach on Sunday 18th September.

Families with children as well as adults are welcome to take part in the project, but everyone under 16 needs to be supervised by a parent or guardian.  Free transport will be provided from locations in Redruth and Camborne and there will be free lunch for all participating volunteers.
