There will be an opportunity for Saltash residents to become compost experts and mentor friends, family and neighbours in the horticultural art of composting.
A free community workshop will be held at the Burraton Community Centre, Grenfell avenue, Saltash on Tuesday 19th July from 7.30 to 9.30pm. The event is organised by Cornwall Waste Action, an environmental not for profit organisation as part of the Cornwall Community Food and Composting project which is funded through the Big Lottery’s Local Food fund.
Interested residents of Saltash and the surrounding areas, can attend the workshop and will receive free training as well as on-going support to become volunteer compost mentors. All trained volunteers are then encouraged to mentor local people from their own social networks to become home composters.
Since the project was established in 2009, over 125 mentors have been trained by Cornwall Waste Action and provided with a free compost bin, caddy and mentor pack.
After the workshop trainees will begin to mentor people within their own social networks and new households mentored will also receive free compost bins as well as practical support.
Julia Pollard, Compost Project Worker for Cornwall Waste Action, says “This project is a positive example of the voluntary sector, enabling social action, which is part of the Governments Big Society agenda. It is also very rewarding for everyone involved, knowing they are making a difference, through reducing the volume of waste going to landfill and helping to prevent the production of harmful gases provoking climate change.” Ms Pollard added “Composting your own kitchen and garden waste, only requires a little effort everyday, which as well as environmentally making sense, is economically a good idea, as it provides you with free wonderful compost to use in your garden”.
Anyone living in the wider Saltash area, who would like to become a volunteer compost mentor, should contact Cornwall Waste Action on 01209 210883 or email (Aktiviere JavaScript, um die Email-Adresse zu sehen) to register a place, on the workshop
