A number of organisations are working in Cornwall on varied beach cleaning activities. CWA have been involved in such activities for a number of years and our annual ‘Big Beach Clean’ is a key event each year.
Our SeaScapes project builds on previous beach cleaning activity and our ‘Plastic Kills’ campaign’, with the aim to actively encourage local communities to use nature as a resource for beneficial outdoor activities such as coastal walks, bird-watching, wildflower identification and rocky rambles.
The project will actively target communities or groups of people who do not currently access coastal areas for recreational purposes on a regular basis, even though beaches are in close vicinity to where they live. Reasons for local people not visiting beaches and the surrounding environment are complex, but economical and social factors influence such decision making, such as: lack of income, ill health, social isolation or low self-esteem.
Another outcome of SeaScapes is to increase public awareness of the dangers to wildlife from litter, especially plastic, left in the outdoor environment. All key activities undertaken by this project include an element of litter picking and rubbish clearance. It is hoped such activities will increase community involvement and a sense of ownership of open spaces. As well as enabling participants the opportunity to become physically active and healthier as well as informing that human behaviour can be detrimental to biodiversity.
SeaScapes is currently focused on West Cornwall, with activity days centered on the beaches relatively close to the urban conurbation of Redruth/Camborne, which is the most deprived area in Cornwall. Residents from this area will be given the opportunity to experience an alternative outdoor environment and enjoy public open spaces on their coastline.

We do need people to book in advance, as we can not guarantee space on the minibus
We will have a registration process up and running shortly, the project is aiming to target local people within Camborne/Redruth areas and priority may need to be given to disadvantaged people if demand is high. although this would include people like yourself with no own transport.

This project sound really great, we haven’t taken our kids to the beach for a year now that we don’t have a car and i want them to know more about the wider environment.
How do we get involved?
