Reduce waste and save money

The Neighbourhood Recycling Project in Pengegon, Camborne is a community waste initiative between Cornwall Waste Action and the Pengegon Area Collective, with the aim of raising local awareness about waste reduction, through a series of fortnightly community based workshops.

Next Tuesday, the 21st June at 10 am the project will be holding a community workshop at Pengegon Scout Hut, on food waste and the advantages of re-using left-over food in a range of simple recipes, that can be cooked for most families. Participants will be given the opportunities to share experience over free cake and refreshments.

Cornwall Waste Action’s Community Project Worker, Jacqueline Merrick Says “Throwing food away is simply a waste of money as well as being environmentally wrong, through planned shopping and cooking activity, you can still enjoy a wide range of food at home, but at far lower cost, for your household budget.  You can also dramatically reduce the environmental impact of the weekly bin, by removing food waste from its contents, as they create methane and are affecting climate change.”

The project is keen to work with local people over the age of 19, from the Pengegon, Gwelmor, and Park an Tansys area of Camborne who are currently not in employment and would like to take advantage of free workshops.

Cornwall Waste Action will provide participants with the skills and enthusiasm to take on the message of waste reduction both in their own homes and in the wider environment. Whilst, there will also be additional support available for local people, to help them look at opportunities which will enable future employment.

Ms Merrick said “There has been a lot of unemployment in this area, we need to support people break out of the cycle of poverty and find decent employment. We are keen to see out of work residents and other local people who are not economically active attend.  Participation could result in a range of outcomes including the development of local community enterprises or sign posting to volunteering opportunities with other charitable organisations.
