Cornwall Scrapstore has announced that from the end of May, they will be closing down their Liskeard branch, although both the St. Austell and Pool branches will continue to operate.
Cornwall ScrapStore has been providing materials for art and play in the county for seventeen years and has been a registered Charity for thirteen years. During all that time members have had free access to a wealth of fabric, paper, card, etc. that would have otherwise gone to land fill and would have cost significantly more on the open market. However, because of a serious reduction in our funding from Cornwall Council and doubts over any possible funding in further years the Trustees of Cornwall ScrapStore have had to make some difficult decisions about the future of the organisation.
The most significant of these decisions was to make the staff redundant from the end of May. However, so great is the dedication of the employees that they have offered to continue on a part-time voluntary basis to give as much continuity to Scrapstore’s services as possible.
In addition to closing the Liskeard branch, Scrapstore will be operating reduced hours at Pool (which will now only be open on Tuesdays) and St. Austell (which will be open on Thursdays). Gary King, Project Co-ordinator for Cornwall Scrapstore said,
“Scrapstore has been brilliant for providing all sorts of groups across the county with a fantastic range of materials for art and play. We really hope that a way can be found to enable us to carry on doing this for years to come We are really sorry, in particular, that we have had to close down our Liskeard branch, but we do want to stress that members can visit St. Austell or Pool.”
Phil Walsh, Chair of the Trustees said,
“The Trustees have had to make some very hard decisions. Cornwall Council has supported the Scrapstore for many years, and we are grateful to them for this support. We had hoped that they would be able to support us to the same extent as in previous years, but their own financial situation has meant that this has not been possible. The Trustees will now have to look at a sustainable operational model for the future. In the meantime, we are extremely grateful to our loyal and dedicated staff, who have offered to carry on working on a voluntary basis, to ensure that we are still able to offer a service to our members.”
Phil continued to say that the Trustees would be delighted to hear from anybody who could offer any solutions to Scrapstore’s current funding crisis.
