Chyan Community Field at Halvasso, near Falmouth is hosting a horticultural course in organic vegetable growing on Sunday 27th March.
The course will cover the basic principles of organic growing as well as explore further methods like companion planting and permaculture. The workshop is targeted at a range of people who want their knowledge of organic vegetable growing vegetables and is relevant to someone with a small growing space such as a backyard, an allotment or someone with an acre of land.
Amelia Lake, Chyan’s Project Co-ordinator says “This course will give both the inspiration and skills needed to grow your own fruit and vegetables organically, through participating in this event you will be harvesting your own fresh food in a couple of months at low economic cost to your household budget”. Ms Lake added “The timing of this course is just right, as spring is now here and the main vegetable growing season is starting.”
The course runs from 10:00 am. Until 4 pm. and is lead by Jane Acton, an experienced teacher based in west Cornwall, who has a sustainability and horticultural background. Participants on the course will have the chance to share growing experiences, as well as meet new people during the day. The course costs are at a subsidised rate of £20 and participants will have to bring their own lunch The course is part of the Big Lottery’s Local Food funded growing project at Chyan, which enables the day to be significantly discounted, allowing the opportunity for more people to attend.
The course will be held at the beautiful and inspiring Chyan Community Field which has 8 years of experience as an environmental community project. The field is designed as a community space for groups to experience the outdoors, growing and have learning experiences It has examples of sustainable building, permaculture, wildlife gardening, outdoor play and community allotments.
As well as courses and seasonal events, Chyan Community Field hosts regular volunteer days on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 2 pm, on the community allotments, where participants can learn practically how to grow fruit as well as enjoy the outdoor environment.
