Winter 20111

We have been very busy at CWA this winter with workshops in Newquay, Truro and Bodmin and we have been trained quite a few new mentors. It was lovely to meet more compost enthusiasts!

And the mentors have been very busy too; several of them have completed more than 20 hours volunteering, and two of them have mentored more than 10 people. Well done!

We have also had articles in the West Briton and the Cornish Guardian.

The winner of the Lucky Dip is Peter Miller who wins a Green Johanna. Here are his top composting tips:

“I’m a gardener and landscaper and spend lots of time in people’s gardens, I’m always trying to enthuse my clients as to how beneficial compost is for their beds and borders, helping improve soil structure and increase fertility.
My favourite composting tips are to keep an even balance of brown and green waste, when starting a bin add as much waste as you can to get things moving, add a couple of handfuls of soil or prepared compost to induce bacterial activity and if you have the privacy pee on your compost to help activate the nitrogen cycle!”

Tim Thompson’s tip is to add wood ash to your compost and a favourite mentoring tip is to show people how much of their waste can be kept out of kerbside waste collection. “So many people don’t realise that things like toilet roll middles and egg cartons can be used to improve the balance of their compost.”
