Summer 2010 – update

Mid Cornwall Workshops

CWA have just run 3 workshops in Truro and St Austell, and have  trained 46 compost mentors in Mid Cornwall.  We are now looking for compost mentors in Newquay. This means that there are now over 100 active compost mentors in Cornwall.

Compost Mentors Reward Scheme

This month we have introduced our Compost Mentors Reward Scheme: all mentors who complete over 20 hours of volunteering will be given a reward for their efforts. They will receive a £5 voucher to spend at Tamar Organics on the seeds of their choice. (Tamar Organics is based in Cornwall near Launceston, and they offer an amazing range of organic seeds.)

Project Outcomes: some figures

In Year 1 of the project over 130 households were mentored; as each household can divert 300 kg of organic waste from landfill per year by composting, it means that by December 2010 the project will have helped to divert about 39,000 kg of organic waste from landfill – that is 39 tons.  Well done mentors!

Events and Media:

This summer we spread the word about composting at the Royal Cornwall Show and we had articles about the Compost Mentors published in the Newquay Voice.
