During October, November and until the 12th of December, Cornwall Councils Waste Awareness Team will be in Camborne, Pool and Redruth.
Promoting recycling and advising local residents on the importance of waste minimisation trying to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.
Recent figures show that it costs £1.99 to collect, transport and landfill a black bag of rubbish, but only £0.41 to collect and recover a box or bag of recycling.
In 2009/2010 residents of Cornwall generated 285,206 tonnes of household waste, that’s about ½ a tonne of rubbish per person! 37% of the waste generated is now recycled or composted, which still leaves 67% of our waste going to landfill. Preliminary monitoring of recycling participation in the area show kerbside recycling rates maybe as low as 33%.
There is a massive room for improvement here and it needs all of our efforts to achieve good results. Reducing, Reusing and Recycling waste are three of the main ways of stopping waste from going to landfill.
The waste awareness team will also be introducing the big green ticket competition for the residents of Camborne, Pool and Redruth. The competition is free to enter and is a cross between a lottery and a raffle. It is a “thank you” to those who already recycle, and an incentive for those who don’t. Residents who enter the big green ticket competition will be given the chance to win £100 of £50 worth of highstreet vouchers in bi weekly draws, simply by proving they are recycling.
