ReZolve, a local social enterprise, which currently manages the Cornish Real Nappy Project and Go Real, the Real Nappy Information Service, are developing the washable continence pants, specifically aimed at those aged 4 – 15 years.
The organisation have been successful in increasing use of Real Nappies both in Cornwall and nationally and are now working closely with the NHS to develop and trial a product that could prove to have a lower environmental impact and save money.
At present in Cornwall there are over 400 young users of disposable incontinence products, with an average use of 4.5 per day. This equates to the disposal of nearly 650,000 products into Cornish landfill sites every year. Existing washable products are aimed at light to medium incontinence and are therefore not equipped for more serious conditions. The introduction of a reusable product would not only reduce the cost to the NHS of purchasing and delivery of disposable products but also the cost of sending them to waste.
Jon Rolls of ReZolve said: ”We are very keen to see if we can develop a washable alternative for older children not only for the positive financial and environmental benefits but also to offer parents a choice for their children. Parents have expressed a wish to use soft breathable fabrics more fitting to the age of their child but they also need a level of convenience that suits their lifestyle.”
ReZolve are particularly keen to ensure that the product meets the needs of the children and families of their target market and so are inviting parents and carers to take part in market research and product trials.
Jon advised: ”We understand that life is not always easy for parents and carers of incontinent children and so we want to make sure that we understand all of the issues involved and can develop a product which offers a real solution.”
An initial focus group discussion is planned for the 1st November to allow interested families to advise the team on their needs and expectations of such a product. Participants for a trial are also being sought. This will take place over a 2-4 week period from mid-November. Travel expenses for any involvement can be paid and there will be a small incentive for taking part.
Should the trial be successful the product could be produced locally and promoted nationwide improving the impact on the environment and providing economic opportunities in Cornwall.
